Table of Contents

In this article, you will find out what tasks a domain registry fulfills and how you can benefit from the direct line through helloly.

What is a domain registry?

Behind every top-level domain is a registry. It is the central organization that assigns and manages top-level domains such as .at or .eu.

In Austria, the two registries nic.at and EURid are particularly relevant. While nic.at assigns and administers the top-level domain .at as well as the second-level domains .co.at and .or.at, EURid is responsible for the top-level domain .eu.

What are the duties of a domain registry?

A domain is a unique address for a unique website. Many of these addresses are highly coveted and are traded for millions. But why do we need a domain registry?

First of all, there needs to be a central registry for domains. This is the only way to guarantee that each domain is only assigned once. These registries are the domain registries.

Each registry has a different pool of top-level domains that it manages. A registry keeps a register of all registered domains to ensure

  • who owns a domain.
  • that each domain is only registered once.
  • that a domain can be transferred securely.

At the same time, it defines the procurement directives and determines the technical and legal conditions for registration. These are, for example

  • Handling the registration and transfer of domains
  • Provide Whois data
  • Implementation of security measures (e.g. DNSSEC)
  • Minimum and maximum length of a domain
  • Permitted characters (e.g. umlauts are not possible for every top-level domain)
  • Deadlines for registration, payment, renewal or deletion
  • Operation of the technical infrastructure (e.g. name server)

helloly and nic.at - in personal contact

Even if physical distance no longer plays a role on the web: Personal contact still has a special quality.

The management of helloly and the nic.at team have known each other personally for over 20 years. This relationship of trust has led to numerous collaborations and joint commitments over the years.

For example, Michael Neumann, Managing Director of helloly, regularly takes part in NIS-2 policy workshops at the invitation of nic.at. Together with the registry and industry colleagues, details of the NIS-2 implementation for .at domains are worked out.

What are the advantages of having a direct line to the registry?

As is so often the case, you only understand the true value of a domain when it refuses to provide its services. When emails come to nothing and websites are no longer accessible. Then there’s fire on the roof.

For example, if a domain is not renewed on time, it will generally be deleted. This can easily happen if a payment is not made. An expired credit card, a change of account … there are many possibilities for a failed payment.

The registry then starts the “Deletion Restorable Period”. This is the name given to the time window during which a domain that is to be deleted can be reclaimed. Once this time window expires, the domain can be freely registered on the market again.

In such a case, quick action is called for. A direct line to the domain registry is a decisive advantage in such a case. More even so with complex domain issues, a direct line to the registry saves time, nerves and ultimately budget.

Customers also benefit from a hosting provider that works directly with the registry when changing domain ownership or registering their domain.

At the same time, a hosting provider that registers domains directly with the domain registry can offer better prices and the domain is active and ready for use more quickly.
